The tempo of a mechanical metronome is controlled by an adjustable weight at the end of an inverted pendulum rod. To change the tempo, the weight can be moved up or down the pendulum rod. Because there is a second, fixed weight on the opposite side of the pendulum pivot, within the metronome box, this mechanism is also known as a double-weighted pendulum. The metronome's pendulum oscillates back and forth in time, and with each oscillation, a mechanism inside the device emits a clicking sound. Battery-free mechanical metronomes are powered by a spring-wound clockwork escapement.
